Beautiful, handmade (completed) cross stitch panel. It has been worked with fine (probably cotton?) embroidery 'silks'/threads/floss. It is heavier than most modern day cross stitch panels - rather more like a woollen needlepoint or tapestry panel (though not quite as heavy)
It features an English 'cottage garden', complete with traditional timber-framed house. The colours are beautifully muted (they do not appear to have faded - i.e. when compared with colours on the reverse side) and would look gorgeous in a vintage-style interior. It could be framed as a picture (though please see note below) or incorporated into a cushion or other small sewing project
It's difficult to date needlecraft projects of this type. I think it probably dates from the 1920s or 1930s (the flowers, in particular, have a very Art Deco feel to them), although it may be slightly later. It's in very good condition. Since it's been made from cotton - rather than wool - it has survived the ravages of moths and other cloth-chomping 'pests'! The underlying canvas is good quality and is very 'solid' (although it has become a little discoloured around the edges over the years)
*Please note* - the top edge of the completed panel is very close to the upper edge of the canvas. I think there is just about enough fabric to incorporate within a seam (e.g. if making a cushion) - although you may need to lose one row of stitching just 'to be sure' (this wouldn't interfere too much with the image). If you want to frame it as a picture you would probably need to firstly sew a band of plain fabric to the upper edge. This is a gorgeous panel and it would be well worth investing a little time and effort in it
Dimensions of actual completed panel - approx. 14" x 11.25" (approx. 36cm x 28.5cm)
It has been well made and I have included one photograph of the reverse side so that you can judge the quality for yourself
Note re. colour: I have tried to reproduce the colours as accurately as possible and the photos are a pretty good representation. However, please be aware of the limitations of digital photography and of personal browser settings. It's difficult to get the colours totally 'true' so please bear this in mind if you are attempting to match this panel to your decor or something in your fabric stash. Please feel free to contact me should you require any further assistance/explanation re. the colours - I will try to help!
