A Tale of Art Nouveau Paris: In the early 1900's in Paris, a group of young women became very famous. They were known as Grisettes, or shopgirls. They worked as milliner's, modistes, and seamstresses. They were among the first "liberated women". They had jobs and modest living quarters away from their parents. They were free, respectable young women. But another thing that made them famous was their sense of style. On Sunday afternoons, in the grand parks and on the boulevards, they showed off the latest in Parisian style. Since they all worked in the fashion industry, they knew the latest trends before they hit the shops. So they saved every penny they earned and bought and made their own wardrobes to display on their Sunday promenade on their only day off.

Here is Cherie, the next in a series of Grisettes. She is 16" tall from the bottom of the base to the top of her head. Her hat adds another 4" to the topmost part of the bow. She is a great fan of the famous designer Paul Poiret's draped coat which is made of Indian silk...a very fine faille embroidered in gold and chocolate brown silk threads with tiny pearls and gold beads. For her gown she has chosen the popular Fortuney style of very finely pleated silk and meatal fabric. The lining of the coat is of black silk taffeta. The muff (with her name embroidered on it) is silk faille. She wears a vintage silk chiffon jabot. And the hat...The buckram base is covered in antique silk velvet trimmed in antique metal bullion braid and a small flower of tiny beads. The bow is made of silk stripe with horsehair to hold the bows in place. Two clusters of amber Swarovski crystals are used as fasteners for her coat. The base is of wood and is finished in gold leaf with an antique finish.

This one of a kind Art Doll is made from polymer clay with a wood armature and cloth body tightly stuffed with fiber fill. She is posed in a fixed position to display her special attitude. The face has been painted with artist acrylic paints.
