This jewelry hanger was born out of my love for repurposing. I live in wine country, and fancy wines get packed in wooden boxes. Sometimes I pass by a company that makes these boxes. They keep a pile of scrap wood outside, and I always take home some pieces thinking that I could make something useful out of them. Here is one example.

Life is chaotic in and of itself, and anything we can do to bring some sanity to it is good. This is why I love organizers. I also love jewelry. To me, it is irresistible. I buy many earrings and necklaces, which presents the problem of storing them. There is nothing worse than to cram all your lovely jewelry inside a box. You can only find one of the earrings you were looking for, and the ones that are all the way in the bottom are forgotten and you never wear them anymore. The necklaces get tangled and damaged. But with this organizer, you will be able to see what you have when you want it.

Instead of painting the wood with traditional paint, I had an idea. I support The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (http://www.safecosmetics.org/), because they work to eliminate the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems from our everyday cosmetics and beauty products. I cleaned up my cabinet a while ago, and in the spirit of upcycling, I try to incorporate some of these cosmetics into my crafts, rather than chuck them. In this case, I stained the board with a russet-colored lipstick. The lipstick allows the beautiful grain of the wood to show through, while enhancing it with a touch of color.

This organizer is about 13 x 2 ΒΌ inches (~ 33 x 6 cm). I glued two yellow daisies on each side, and added a tiny red phlox to each one. In the center I placed a fiery red dahlia with a mini Black Eyed Susan. These flowers are like no other! I hand-drilled the holes for the hooks. Because I don't own any serious power tools, I want to convince you that the hand-drilling gives this piece a special kind of charm. I put a hook on the back for easy hanging, and there you have it, this humble piece of wood was transformed into a pretty, neat, and eco-friendly organizer!
