This linen quilt gets it's inspiration from the beginning of summer.
When I was in elementary school, we would always have a "field day" to commemorate the end of the school year. Regular classes would be canceled and all of the kids would get to play on the school lawn for the entire day. Even some of the parents would come for the picnic lunch. There would be different events, but the one I always looked forward to most was the three legged race. I loved the three legged race, where two kids would pair up, tie one of their legs to the other's leg and then have to race to the end "as one." The red buntings on this quilt remind me of those races, and the coveted ribbons that were given out as prizes at the end of the day.
The white linen I used in this quilt is tea-dyed, to give it an antique, off-white look. The red linen is from remnant pieces of clothing found at my favorite re-use store. The backing is a beautiful and soft robin's-egg blue corduroy. The edges are done in a milk chocolate brown stripe.
This quilt has a wonderful weight and drape. It's heavier than many modern quilts because it has four layers, rather than the traditional three. This is because the linen is backed with a layer of muslin, for added stability.
Quilt top is 100% linen, except for the one striped pennant, which is 100% cotton. Quilt top backing is 100% cotton muslin. Quilt batting is 80/20 cotton/poly. Quilt backing is corduroy (from remnant yardage, so fabric specifics are unavailable - mostly cotton, with a little "stretch").
This quilt is made to be loved and can be gently machine washed and dried. Unless otherwise noted, all Peppermint Pinwheels quilts are washed after completion with a gentle, scent free detergent so they come to you fresh and clean!
