Designed by John Russell (who also designed Midwinter) between about 1940-1959.
I have been unable to find out exact dates - this design is extremely rare and to find a complete set - even more rare!!
The set consists of a coffee pot, sugar bowl, milk jug, 6 cups and 6 saucers (I have an additional 2 cups which I will include with this set too).
Grey and orange harlequin shapes printed on a cream background.
The cups hold approximately 130ml - very sweet - could be used for dessert dishes like choc mousse/mini trifles too??
The empire porcelain mark is under each item except the saucers and coffee pot lid.
"CHECKMATE" and a reg. no is also printed on each but quite faded.
All items are a fine cream porcelain except the saucers and lid of the coffee pot which are a different ceramic. Possibly Mr John Russell was experimenting with combining different ceramics - ahead of his time!
Need to mention.......
Near the lip of the coffee pot is a flattened "blister of glaze", minor and does not effect the pot in any way.
One of the saucers unfortunately has a small chip on the edge- see photo attached.
On each base there is slight wear as you would expect from a set of this age.
Overall they are in superb condition.
Coffee pot with lid - 21cm high
cup -7cm high, diameter 7.5cm
saucer - 13cm diameter
sugar bowl - 5cm high, 9cm diameter
milk jug - 8cm high
