Furthermore, if the role of a Saint is to inspire us, and to pray for us, to make our case to God on our behalf, can you think of anyone who could make your case more eloquently than the glorious Oscar Wilde? Of course not. There is no one.
So I am starting the crusade that will hopefully lead to his canonization. I can't help but think that he would get a kick out of this, and maybe he is laughing at me right now. But in all honestly, I would dearly love for Oscar to watch over me.
I propose that he could be the patron Saint of writers, comedians, Ireland, theatre-folk, smart-asses, trouble-makers, instigators, and of course, the gay community (trust me, Jesus is on my side with this one.)
Here is the prayer that I have written that is on the back of each of the candles:
Dear Oscar, Please help me to see the joy and humor in every day of my life. Please help me to find something to appreciate in all of God's children, no matter how trying. Pray for me, Dearest Oscar.
And please let the world see your goodness and bravery so that we might learn by your example.
Oscar, please keep my spirits high and watch over me always.
Amen.
