When I was in elementary school, we would always have a "field day" to commemorate the end of the school year. Regular classes would be canceled and all of the kids would get to play on the school lawn for the entire day. Even some of the parents would come for the picnic lunch. There would be different events, but the one I always looked forward to most was the three legged race. I loved the three legged race, where two kids would pair up, tie one of their legs to the other's leg and then have to race to the end "as one." The pink pennants on this quilt remind me of those races, and the coveted ribbons that were given out as prizes at the end of the day.
The pink linen pennants are from curtain remnants and are set into a field of chartreuse green linen. The backing is made from unused estate sale yardage of a finely woven pink oxford, giving the back of the quilt the look and feel of an expensive man's dress shirt. Adding to the summer festival look of the quilt, the edges are done in sea green, ocean blue, and white stripe.
To add stability to the linen in this quilt, I've backed the top with a layer of fine muslin. It is then "sandwiched" in the traditional way with a layer of batting in the middle and the pink oxford backing. The quilting is done in a geometric line and triangle pattern over the entire quilt with chartreuse green thread.
Quilt top is 100% linen.
Quilt batting is 80/20 cotton/poly.
Quilt backing is 100% cotton.
This quilt is made to be loved and can be gently machine washed and dried. Unless otherwise noted, all Peppermint Pinwheels quilts are washed after completion with a gentle, scent free detergent so they come to you fresh and clean!
