Wow. Brings back memories. I made this piece when I was a young whipper snapper back in 1993-94, and still heavily influenced by Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Cornell. This piece came shortly after one of my older brothers introduced me to the writings of Marshall McLuhan who was a central figure in new media studies during the 1960's-70's and waxed on about the effects of new technologies and the acceleration of information since the advent of the printing press, which itself was the advent of our visual culture. I can't remember if I titled the piece, but it probably had something to do with Guttenberg,...and I don't mean Steven.

The assemblage measures 32" x 14.75" x 1.5". Each side of the appropriated printer's type tray is filled with vintage wooden printing blocks in a hodgepodge fashion. In the center section is a sepia-toned image of some random guy, an enlarged antique photo I found in a junk store at the time. Lined up underneath him are a handful of found objects - three antique coil electrical resistors and a ceramic hand "pulling" at the copper wire crosshairs that converge over his eye, all of which illustrate technology, information and visual culture. Yeah, it's a little obvious, but hey, I was 23 then, give me a break.

Signed and dated on the back "C. Ferebee, 1994"
