From the ground, this nebula resembles a huge fluffy sheep frisking over the sky. Like the smaller, more northerly Black Sheep Nebula the GRAY SHEEP NEBULA is easily visible to the unaided eye, though at a distance of 5,500 light-years it is some 4 times farther away.
Alternatively known as XBY000-11 this emission nebula mixes glowing cosmic gas and gray dust clouds – young stars are forming intensely in this area.
