Think of a big spring bouquet of blooming irises; purples, plum, and lilac jumbled with intense bright blue and indigo, splashed with touches of white, chartreuse (spring green) and aqua. This sock yarn is softer in color than "Gladiolas" (less purple, more blue, and no orange).
What is a Sock Yarn *Blank*? I'm glad you asked :o)
Two strands of sock yarn (about 200 yds each) have been knit together in a large, white rectangle creating a blank canvas. This blank is then painted with thickened professional acid dyes.
The knitter must bear in mind that the design will be totally gone and irrelevant as a blank is knit back-and-forth and a sock is knit in-the-round. However, the overall color arrangement; should it be generally green on one end and blue on the other, will mean your socks are generally green on one end and blue on the other as well. The design will be obliterated but you will end up with a lovely mottled sock of all the colors mixed up and (with my dye technique) very little pooling, puddling, or flashing. Since the blank is knit with two strands of sock yarn, you will want to knit both socks at the same time as you unravel the blank (no re-skeining is necessary) and the socks will match exactly without futzing to find the repeat in the pattern -- which is good since this dye technique has no repeat.
A lovely, soft, blended sock yarn in a water color collage of purple, blue, plum, indigo, white, chartreuse (spring green)and a hint of aqua. It is ideally suited for knitting a simple pattern or stockinette sock. I'm thinking a "vine" pattern would be simple, yet interesting. It would also look lovely as a lace scarf or shawlette.
I confess that I have struggled and struggled with photographing this sock blank. I seem to have real problems duplicating greens accurately in my photos. I have tweaked until it is close on my monitor but but the chartreuse looks dull and too yellow. This is a case of the reality really is prettier than the photos. If you order this blank and decide it just doesn't meet your color expectations, you may return if for a refund, minus the shipping. See our policies page for more info on Returns and Refunds.
** The yarn:
Painted over a wool sock yarn base; 90% superwash wool, 10% nylon.
Fingering weight, the blank weighs 100g (3.5 oz) and is approximately 365 m (400 yds) and about 18-20 wpi with a suggested knitting gauge of 28 stitches over 10 cm (4 ") on a 2.25 mm needle (US size 1). Unravel from tag end. Enough yarn for one pair of average sized socks.
The last picture shows an example of how a painted blank in a different colorway will knit up.
