McKuen was a phenomenon in the 1960s and 70s. A poet and songwriter who made it to the top of the charts for both recordings and books.
This spoken word album was an unauthorized reissue of McKuen's 1957 recording "Beatsville," with editing and song titles changed to appeal to hippies instead of the earlier beatniks. McKuen successfully sued the label.
McKuen writes sarcastically about the grungy, often deluded, denizens of the downtown hipster scene, including himself as a rather uncool but eager wannabe. Poems include "I Dig Sausalito," "Love Child's Lament" and "Kranko's Hippie Party."
Album never opened. Cover art is colorful and "psychedelic."
