Years ago we traveled to the island of Roatan (off the coast of Honduras) before it became a real "diving hot spot". We spent most of our time in West End Village where only 6 months prior electricity was run through this small town.
We took a bus over the mountains to Oak Ridge, towards the other end of this very long and beautiful island, and there we met with people who spoke of a "once-happening" yacht club where a murder took place and was thereafter abandoned. (The original owner was murdered by one of the natives who lived in up in the hills -- he was known to have treated the natives very poorly.)
We hired a guide who took us in a dugout canoe to see this mysterious place -- he carried a gun with him wrapped up in plastic. As we traveled along the island, the beauty of the crystal water and rock formations jutting out of the sea -- with green hills that began at the shoreline was just incredible! When we arrived at the dock and went into the building, bats flew out. We spent a little time there that afternoon and fantasized about buying the place.
There is so much more to this story (as only a story about a visit to a Caribbean island can be).
