Reclaimed Redwood Scraps turned into wall art and/or a functional tray!
Here in Huntsville we have some building projects going on whereby homes are made from as much reclaimed, donated materials as possible. I've been involved with them since moving here in Fall of 2009 and one of the perks is, I get their scrap pieces of wood!
I recently made this little tray out of the beautiful redwood they used to make doors for their outdoor patio. These are the leftover pieces, little scraps of wood that are basically useless to them now but perfect for me to work with. I've cut the long thing scraps and glued them together with wood glue for the 'body' of this tray. The edges are made from a larger piece of wood that I cut to form triangles.
Redwood that has aged outdoors is beautiful...notice the subtle changes in color from gray to brown and pink and red. I have some close up photos of the end pieces: NOTE those lines or cracks you see do not compromise the piece, it is a sturdy little tray but don't be lugging a bowling ball around on it okay? Feel free to hang it up and go tribal. Use it for your netbook to cool off or place it anywhere you want and see what happens!
