Salves and ointments have been used by shamans and witches for goodness knows how long – some as offerings to the spirits & gods and others call them or to travel to meet them. This salve I made is used by such persons in specific rituals whereupon they rub the salve upon their brow, eyelids, neck, chest, hands or feet (but not necessarily all of them) to experience the following: to be able to see and commune with the wild nature spirits who dwell in forests, glades, and marshes; to walk between worlds or "hedgecross"; or, lastly, to call and commune with a plant or tree ally. However, use with caution as the good folk have been known to pluck out the eyes of those who can see them without their knowing - make sure they know what you're up to first.

In folk traditions, when the leaves of oak, ash, and thorn are all present at the same time, it is said one will be able to see the good folk and the spirits which dwell in the wilds. The use of fern seed is also found in folklore and is rubbed on the eyelids in order to see fairies. The seed is really the spores of the fern and ferns were considered to be either the dwelling of fairies or the entrance to their realm in the spirit world overlapping ours. The same is said of toadstools, especially amanita muscaria.
