This limited edition screenprint is No. 3 (of 6) in my first series of ‘Wonders from a Cabinet of Curiosities’

The prints have been lovingly hand-printed by me in velvety black, non-toxic, water-based ink on a high quality, acid-free, heavyweight (400gsm) watercolour paper, in a very limited edition of 30 prints.

The image size is w13xh19cm (5.12” x 7.48”) and the paper size is w18xh24cm (7.1” x 9.45”).

Each print in the edition is numbered (1/30, 2/30 etc.), titled (‘Curiosity Cabinet [Series 1]: III’) and signed along the bottom in pencil. If you order a print you will be sent the next/consecutive numbered available print in the edition.

[The first four photos show this print [No.3] in the series. The fifth photo shows this print with others in the series.]

The inspiration behind this print series:
After a visit to Siebold House in Leiden, and Philipp Von Siebold’s fascinating 19th Century collection of specimens (both animal & vegetable) gathered on his travels through Japan between 1823 and 1828, I was inspired to start making pen and ink drawings of creatures (and other things) in jars. My drawings are also informed by early scientific engravings – wonderful (in the true sense of the word, i.e. ‘full of wonder’) and sometimes a little crazy! – in particular the 18th Century studies and ‘Cabinet of Natural Curiosities’ of Albertus Seba, and the 19th Century graphic explorations of German biologist Ernst Haeckel.

I find there is something very melancholy about low-lit shelves of specimen jars filled with long dead, yet perfectly preserved, creatures. They seem to be holding their breath, collectively waiting for some unknown (and unknowable?) thing. There is sadness & a sense of loss there, but also great beauty… it is this duality (inextricably part of the existence of everything) that I am exploring with these drawings.

A note on packaging:
The print will be sent to you wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and packaged between two pieces of sturdy cardboard in a protective envelope to ensure it arrives in tip-top condition.
