Handmade seed packets filled with organic, open pollinated, heirloom seeds grown and collected by hand on our small scale farm. A beautiful and loving gift for both expert and aspiring gardeners, as well as a creative, environmentally conscious alternative to conventional seed.

Each seed packet you buy helps to support The Kirk Estate – the 19th century haunted farmhouse and surrounding property where I live that has been preserved for five generations. These photos were taken there. Our small scale farm is worked the old fashioned way; no chemicals, no petroleum intensive machines -only sustainable farming practices that help to improve the land, the environment, the wildlife, and the people. Thank you for your support of this time and effort intensive process. Your purchase is helping to make a difference. To learn more about us visit: www.thelittleragamuffin.com

Phaseolus vulgaris
20+ seeds

Blue Shackamaxon is an heirloom variety grown and saved by the Lanape Tribe in Pennsylvania. With vines reaching 6 to 7 feet tall bearing rose-pink flowers, the bean pods are garnet red, fading to navy blue upon drying, and the beans themselves are navy blue. The dried beans can be used for any recipe calling for Mexican-style black beans. This easy to grow staple of the vegetable garden is a tasty snap bean, but a fabulous dry black bean.

Days to Germination: 8-10 days germination may take two weeks or more if soil temperatures are below 60 F.
Days to Maturity: 85-105 days
Lifecycle: annual
Sunlight: full sun
Height: pole type 5-10 ft
Spread: 1-2 ft.
Bloom time: mid-summer, late-summer

How to plant: Do not plant until danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Germination is poor when soil temperature is below 60 F. Cold air temperatures (even above freezing) can injure plants and reduce yields. Soaking beans to hasten germination may damage seeds. Do not start seeds inside, as beans do not like to be transplanted.

Construct trellis, teepee, or single-pole support before seeding to avoid injurying plant roots later. Bamboo poles or saplings lashed together make easy, inexpensive supports. Do not locate trellis where it will shade other plants that need full sun.

Plant seed one inch deep (deeper if soil is dry), in hills of four to six seeds at the base of each pole. Plant 3 inches apart in rows along the base of linear trellises.
