I’ve been enjoying taking the skills my grandmother taught me about crochet and using them to manipulate wire in ways both familiar and new.
This piece, which took nearly 36 hours to complete, required the use of a tiny size 7 steel hook to create four strips of scalloped lace from 30 gauge purple Parawire (permanently colored copper wire). Like fine chain-mail, crocheted wire lace is actually very smooth and silky against the skin and 30 gauge wire is extremely light.
After sewing the four strips together in layers using the same Parawire, I attached the bib to a piece of 16 gauge purple Artistic Wire (permanently colored copper wire) using more Parawire.
The creepy Madame Spider waiting patiently to startle on-lookers into awareness of her presence is an extra-large antiqued brass stamping measuring 1¼” (33mm) in width and length that I wired into the lace using Parawire.
I hand-curved the tail of an antique brass dragonfly to create a hook closure at the front of the necklace. The hook can be inserted anywhere along the antiqued brass oval curb chain I used to complete the necklace, at the end of which I attached an antique brass faerie. Depending on how long or short you wear the bib will determine how long and where the faerie will hang (if worn like a semi-choker, the faerie can be left to hang down your back).
The maximum length of this necklace is 27½” (69.85cm). The faerie dangle adds an extra inch (25.4mm).
NOTE: I take extremely high resolution photographs, so please use the zoom feature to examine the intricate details of this piece up close.
I'll only make this treasure once, which makes it OOAK (one of a kind) and means you will receive the exact item shown in the photographs, ready to ship. I may be able to re-size a treasure, change a clasp style, or modify the type of ear wire at no additional cost, so if you desire a modification, please Etsy convo me BEFORE placing your order.
Your treasure will arrive in a custom handmade gift box using recycled materials, such as beautiful faerie calendar pages, that you can reuse on a vanity or fill with scented cotton balls and place into your lingerie drawer.
