Bird creature mask in hand wet-formed leather. Named "Nightjar 1". Designed with an element of anatomical realism in mind.
The design is based on the nocturnal birds of the family Caprimulgidae. He began as a nightjar but I do believe he resembles a frogmouth more now. They have wide short bills perfect for catching moths and flying insects after twilight.
Hand sewn needle sculpted features. The folds and furrows are anchored in place with suture-like shaping stitches in heavy duty nylon thread. He has a lot of character in his stern little brow. Several rows of gathering creates the raised eyebrow and raised cheekbone. The cheeks have a ruffled edge on the sides. His eyes are round and birdlike and he has little nostrils in his beak.
As you can see in the profile photo when I say 'raised' I mean above the wearers face not simply pulled upwards. The raised areas I believe create a form suggestive of a skull. A rounded edge forming the ocular ridge surrounding the eye socket/orbit. To me this is preferable to molding the mask on a mannequin/human face cast alone. This way I feel it resembles the creature I am aiming for and creates a more eerie 'otherness'.
Also gives an eensy bit of a Froudian evil fae look...just slightly demonic...not too much. :) He could certainly fit into a "Dark Crystal" or "Labyrinth" themed event.
The color is pure fantasy as these birds in reality are camouflaged perfectly with tree bark and dead leaves. This one is a regal midnight purple with antique bronze dry brushed on his beak with some antique gold mottled throughout.
Stretchy, comfortable, easily adjustable cord ties.
