If only we have eyes to see.
Anasazi (also known as Ancestral Puebloans ) is often translated as “enemy ancestors” but the more accurate translation is “ancestors that scattered”. Evidence shows that the original settlements were not abandoned but rather ritually sealed off and sacred ritual sites burned out purposefully. These were a people connected----rooted in the earth yet touching the sky. These were a people who did not hide in their constructed homes, but rather embraced Mother Earth, inviting the nurture and the teaching. These were a people who embraced both the light and the shadow, respecting the wisdom of both. These were a people who rode the wave of change and challenge in balance and joy. The wisdom inherent in what they left behind is a hidden treasure and a great gift.
The Anasazi were a spiritual people in a physical existence. The petroglyphs they carved speak to that vision of soulful reality. The People did not record the physical illusion but rather the soul of the being. Each glyph records the energy and movement of a soul with purpose not to isolate but rather to incorporate.
The glyphs also communicate their connection from the light within to the that surrounds to the light above.
Every creature communicated a wisdom, a connection……and those connections surrounded them …..all the Anasazi had to do was listen. This quilt communicates that connection---the gift they left for us to discover.
The Great Wall of Barrier Canyon features a series of glyphs and natural elements that inspired this OOAK 40” x 30” quilt.
The glyphs are created using an encaustic technique I developed. The details are all totally hand-quilted. Each glyph communicates a different aspect of spirit. Hidden in the movement are creatures who communicated
their wisdom. Do you see them? In addition, in the dark, you will experience a glimpse of the wonder
these ancient ancestors experienced on a starry night in the desert. Glowing windows, stars, the moon, and reflections of a greater Being---all connected. Ruby red glass beads and real red jasper accent the cotton quilt.
A pocket is sewn on the back to accommodate a rod for hanging, if you so choose.
Perhaps the ancestors will speak to you.
