ABOUT THE MODERN MOURNER
This shop section came as a result of an invitation to participate in The Modern Mourner website at http://modernmourner.blogspot.com. I am honoured to be a part of this venture and encourage you to visit this site. Shirley's genuine desire to find meaningful ways to help celebrate a loved ones life shines through in the ideas and artists she has bought together on her website. The Modern Mourner is about joy, humor and happiness; it is about finding warm, sincere, heartfelt ways to honour the lives of those we love.
Many modern-day mourners don’t have an extensive outlet for their grief as they would have had in earlier times. Funerals have become homogenized and commercialized, leaving families at arms length - our ancestors would be astonished by how far removed modern society has become from death. There's no need to be morbid; there's no need to surrender to bland and sterile design; and there's no need to stow away the sentimental items we cherish.
Shirleys' belief in meaningful repurposing of sentimental items harmonizes with my own design philosophy. A treasured brooch; pretty buttons; embroidered table linens; silk scarfs; salvaged lace and trims; worn leathers and rough tweeds; a favourite tie or even a fondly remembered phrase can be incorporated into a new item to preserve the memory of a loved one.
There are so many creative options to keep memories close and cherished items in our lives, giving them new purpose in the process. I offer items made with my own found treasures, your sentimental items or a combination of both. Please contact me if you would like a piece commissioned.
