These are also called "French Butter Keepers". You pack cold or cool butter firmly into the deep well which is part of the top of the jar and fill the base with enough cold water to surround the top when it's placed back on the base. It will hold 1 cup or 2 sticks of butter. The butter will stay at a nice spreading consistency and you can keep it on your counter or table, not having to refrigerate it. I make the top flat so you just set it upside down and use it on the table to serve from. Change the water every 2 - 3 days. It's nice to have butter that isn't rock hard or soft and runny! We have used one year round and it works both summer and winter!
