Did you know that the lotus appears frequently in Hindu, Chinese and Buddhist art as a symbol of mental, physical, and spiritual purity? As you can see from this photo, the lotus lives in murky, muddy water, but because of the strong stem, the leaves are pushed above water and the lotus itself blooms on the surface, pristine and clean and warmed by the sun.

In Buddhism, the pink lotus is seen as particularly auspicious, the "supreme" lotus. You will often see the Buddha sitting on a giant pink lotus.
