In the freezing twilight of a snowy New Year's Eve, a little girl walked barefoot along the streets of the prosperous. She feared going home to her angry father, as she had not sold any matches. She lit one match and thought she was by a warm stove. More matches, and she thought there was a festive Christmas tree and a table of wonderful foods. When she lit another, her loving Grandmother appeared to her - the only person who had ever been kind to her. As she quickly struck more matches, her Grandmother took her in her arms and they flew away - beyond the cold, hunger and fear - up to God. In the morning the townspeople found her frozen to death in the snow. Too sad...(short synopsis)
"The Little Match Girl" is one in a series of twelve beautifully designed porcelain commemorative plates made by Royal Copenhagen honoring the delightful and meaningful fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). Each is 7-1/2 inches and has a 3/8th-inch gold band embossed with flowers, leaves, birds, swans and butterflies, with a narrow gold ban on each side. A thin gold band surrounds a 4-1/4-inch gorgeous, detailed center illustration. On the back: "Royal Copenhagen" with a crown, in green; three blue wavy lines; the number "9268". Below, it says "Private Commission", "The Hans Christian Andersen Plate"", "The Little Match Girl", and "copyright 1975 Pauline Ellison" (the illustrator).
