Sonas, Gaelic for happiness, performs popular Irish songs, traditional instrumental Irish and Scottish music, as well as folk, contemporary and original music adding a touch of Celtic flair. Their tunes are upbeat foot stomping jigs, reels, and up-tempo traditional songs, yet they are mesmerizing and haunting with their gentle airs and slow tunes. Sonas has been featured both on 89.5 FM WSOU’s “Celtic Heritage Hour” and the prestigious WFUV 90.7 FM program ‘Ceol na nGael’ (Gaelic for "music of the Gaels").
Sonas formed in the summer of 2006, after Tina and Margie, two sisters who had been playing Cape Breton style music together for a few years, decided they wanted people to hear this great music. Tina and Margie spent a few summers at the Ceilidh Trail School of Celtic Music in CB, Nova Scotia and when they got back home, they formed a Celtic band with a strong Cape Breton style influence. Sonas was fortunate to study with some of the great masters of Cape Breton style fiddle and piano accompaniment: Troy MacGillivray, Kimberly Fraser, Jerry Holland, Howie MacDonald.
In 2008 Sonas added vocals and guitar to their repertoire. Erin is an actress and singer who regularly performs with various regional theatres in New York and New Jersey. Her beautiful singing voice brings to life songs such as Erin Gra Mo Chroi, Rare Ould Times, Fields of Athenry among many other great Irish songs. Guitarist Jim O'Brien appears on this album.
"Erin’s vocals are captivating, warm and at times haunting, and flow effortlessly with the equally enchanting piano playing of Margie Waldrum. Their combined efforts on vocal harmonies are soothing and add to the overall richness of the album."
