This carved wooden wall sculpture is a from a current theme that I have been working on.
The Nike Of The Forest theme is an expression of nature's resilience to the pressures that people have put upon this earth. The figuative element in this work borrows from the Greek sculpture Winged Victory of Samothrace.
As a current owner of a wood lot with a pond, this then extends into the concept of one being in the role of caretaker, or steward of the wood lot. I am ejoying creating these sculpture as a series of allegories.
The center piece of this sculpture is a remnant of an old root of an American Chestnut tree that was cut down in the 1930's in an attempt to save heathy trees from the impending blight. This blight quickly destroyed a once dominant forest species.
The wings are carved Hemlock, pigmented , then finished. The exposed wood grain on the winged is symmetrical, and mimics raptor plumage patterns The wings are lap jointed to the Chestnut, and blended.
The size of this sculpture is 43" W x 40" H x 11" D
The sculpture has a metal bracket on back for wall mounting.
