This is a vintage handcarved cameo brooch set in a beautifully framed bezel...the frame is very Victorian in style, and I have seen it several times, but the cameo is of newer vintage. I would expect the frames were not changed in appearance as quickly as the newest portraits became fashionable. This girl is very modern and forward looking as she is, with her upturned nose and saucy bobbed hair, standing in the middle of the Roaring Twenties. The young woman's portrait is sweet and her hair and bodice were especially attenuated. There was a generation of young people who had one foot in their parents Victorian love of myth and romanticism having been steeped in the Greek and Roman classics, and the other firmly set in the aftermath of a world war.
The detail to this piece is excellent...look at the hair, and the flowers have been carved so they retain the color of the shell.
Bezel set filigree with a flower at each end of the six sided frame...no artist signature, but the frame is hallmarked STERLING.
The frame is 1 1/4" wide x 1 5/8" long. The pin is slightly bowed, but holds tight and secure. Vintage, handwrought.
