It is believed that they are not only guides of the soul to the otherworlds or the afterlife, but that they are also the messengers between humans and gods and spirits. The Bird Goddess was a primeval figure worshipped in the time of prehistory. Her remnants can be found in the bird-clawed feet and wings of the ancient goddesses Ereshkigal, Lilith, and Baba Yaga as well as goddesses associated with birds like the Morrigan with Ravens and crows, Hecate with Owls, and Freyja with Hawks, and so on...
Apply this lifting salve to your bare skin during ritual or trancework to call a bird familiar to you, to shapeshift into a bird, to fly in this realm or the others, or to invoke the bird goddess. Apply to your pulse points (neck, ankles, wrists, behind the knees and elbows, and other 'bits') or the salve can be applied to your entire body. For the best results to your intent use outdoors or at least have the window open indoors - you know, so you can fly out of it.
Ingredients: bone of owl, wing of crow, fat of duck, leaf of mugwort and wormwood, balm of gilead, leaf of belladonna, root of mandrake (mandragora officinarum), and wax of bees crafted by the witch on the day of Saturn patron of witches (do not attempt to recreate, proportion is everything). This salve keeps for two years if properly stored.
