Technically speaking, I began the sketch for Vertical Cities a little over a year ago. You can see the original, much rougher, drawings at my flickr (flickr.com/photos/timeticking). The more fully-realized drawing & inking soon followed (what you see here), which took about six months to complete.
The concept's pretty self-explanatory: an imaginary city re-imagined from the standard horizontal plane to a vertical one. Broadly speaking, the idea came about from a long-term immersion in the sprawling horizontal cityscape of Dallas, along with a childhood fascination with skyscrapers. Reimagining public transportation on a vertical plane (local & express elevators in lieu of subways) was a really fun thing to plan out, in addition to trying to determine which places of business to include and where in the whole schema.
It also gave me plenty of great excuses to walk around Chicago neighborhoods last summer soaking in various doorknob shapes and balcony configurations. :)
