This wonderful vintage history textbook, What the Old World Gave the New (Iroquois, 1931), was written by Gertrude and John Van Duyn Southworth. From the first chapter, "The Beginning of History" ("This world of ours is very, very old," the text begins), 12 chapters cover European history and its effect on the new world. The book is filled with black and white photographs and illustrations (often reproduction of old paintings), such as the Colosseum and "a sea fight between the Romans and Carthaginians." There are also maps throughout, a glossary, and an index.
This book is in very good condition, with a tight binding and all pages intact. The cover, which shows a map and sailing ships, has some corner wear and a few stains. There is a name marked in pencil on the front fly leaf, and the last few chapters of the book have some light pencil underlining in the text (see photo). The pages are lightly yellowed.
Size: 198 pp; 5 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches (13.3 x 19 cm)
