The theme of my work represents characteristics of plants and animals native to North America.
These works are carved from solid or joined domestic wood, as well as/or appropriated remnants of vintage American Chestnut that I have foraged. Some pieces incorporate forged steel , glass and epoxy.
The compositions are in the form of masks, figurative, and composites that evolve out of unique pieces of vintage American Chestnut.
I use both additive and subtractive methods of painting the wood surface to expose some of the woodgrain that mimics patterns of fur and plumage.
The source of my inspiration is a small primitive cabin that I immerse myself from time to time.
I have been sculpting and painting since I was a boy. I have an MFA from SUNY Buffalo, and have taught art at the secondary and post-secondary levels. My work is in various public and private collections, including a few large scale installations
