Victorian Era Calling Cards - General Description
In the late 19th century, it was proper to call upon neighbors and friends at particular times of the day or year to be sociable. The custom of using calling cards became quite popular. Much like a business card of today, these little cards were meant to be given away. However, unlike business cards, they typically only contained the name of the person. If the person you were calling on was not home or couldn't recieve visitors, you would leave your card with a servant or in a little tray in the foyer. That way the person would know you had made the effort to come call.
Today many people collect these cards. They also can be used in artwork and decoupage, placed under glass, or arranged in a frame to make a more modern statement.
The cards I am selling probably came from a printer's shop as many of them have specifications and costs for printing rather than a name. Many of them do have names, however, to demonstrate the various typefaces that the printer could use.
All these cards are sold as is, keeping in mind that they are 125-150 years old. None are torn, but some do have a crease or two on a corner and some with lift-up flaps need to be reglued. Please email me with quesions before you buy.
Thanks so much!
