Hand-smocked lattice design on a hand-blocked mini hat.
Inspired by those round 1940s and 50s pillows which have currently seen a revival in interiors stores.
By hand I pinched, twisted and stitched a piece of rich soft chocolate brown cotton velvet using the vintage Lattice smocking or Canadian smocking technique into the design you see here making it resemble a pie crust!
Then I layered it over a hand blocked buckram base made using traditional millinery techniques involving steam and wooden hat blocks, and finished with a wired brim edge to maintain sturdiness.
Can be worn tilted towards the front of the head in a jaunty manner.
Measures approx 4.5" - 12cm in diameter.
Held in place with a loop of hat elastic underneath.
