Here is a antique woolen blanket from a local Alberta woolen mill – Prairie Woolen Mills . It is grass green in colour and measures 68” wide by 85” long.There are a few black threads throughout.
The wool is woven in a diagonal weave with a herringbone effect. The ends are securely stitched in a blanket stitch with a paler shade of green.
The original lable is entact which reads “ The Sovereign 100% ,pure wool blanket, Slumberland, Prairie Woolen Mills Ltd. Edmonton, Calgary, Magrath, Alberta, Canada”
In the upper left hand corner there is a gold stamp with the profile of a king, that may be King George VI the father of Queen Elizabeth II who died in 1952, or perhaps a generic likeness.
I believe the blanket does date to the 1950’s or earlier, it is locally made but I can only find a reference to the woolen mill in Magrath, having existed from sometime after 1911 to 1960.
The blanket is in good condition with no holes or tears, there is yellowing on the fold lines and patches of variations in colour throughout the blanket( mostly on one side) which may come out if washed. The blanket is sold as found I generally do not wash woolen blankets, I will leave that to the new owner.
From rustic and earthy to calming this is a wonderful blanket for the cottage or cabin, nice and warm as only wool can be. The green shade will also go with most floral prints so easy to mix and match with your vintage shabby chic chintzes and vintage bed linens in a country cottage setting..
