Technique: Batik

Fabric: 100 percent mercerized cotton
Here's a new pattern I've created based on a design from the Ivory Coast. This new batik features stylized gecko motifs, rendered in my navy blue colorway. The geckos are approximately 5" long and 2" wide. There are fifteen geckos on this piece.
To create this fabric, I waxed the fabric, leaving unwaxed the areas that I wanted to be blue -- the gecko shapes. I dyed it in a strong value of navy. The wax crackled and allowed some dye to seep through and create fissures of blue. As with all batiks, one side of the fabric will have different hues and patterning than the other.
I have removed the wax in boiling water and tested this fabric for colorfastness in 140 degree water.
