This gorgeous vintage hat by Modernette, dating to about the 1950s, is a platter hat with an elegant swirl of fabric on top (picture Audrey Hepburn wearing it with long gloves). The fabric is a woven, shining fabric with substantial body--silk perhaps or polyester. The hat is softly domed on top with a 2 1/2 to 3 inch plateau around it, swirled with fabric. Two covered prongs hold it on the head. There's also a veil, which is attached to the hat across the front and then goes around the head to tie behind the neck; the tips are glued to velvet ribbon.

The hat label says Modernette, Stix, Baer & Fuller (a now defunct St. Louis department store). The hat can be tilted forward or to the side, as you prefer.

The hat is in very good condition. There are no snags in the fabric. The underside of the brim is a little wavy, but nothing that detracts from the look of the hat. The veil has a few tears in it near where it attaches; it's not really noticeable but the veil could be replaced or even just cut away.

The hat measures 19 inches (48.2 cm) around the inside brim, but it is adjustable to fit most heads. It's 12 1/2 inches from front to back and 12 1/4 inches from side to side (31.7 x 31 cm).
