A yin-yang of a vessel. Primitive and refined. Rough and smooth. Dark and light. The outside feels satisfyingly rough to the touch, while the interior is silky, refined, and glossy.
Each little facet of this wheel-thrown form was hand carved, one by one. The resulting smoothness of the carved clay imparts a very subtle sheen. To accentuate the dark, deeply textured clay, I chose the perfect contrast of a pale blue-green celadon glaze. The unglazed carved clay is a deep espresso brown - almost black but with richer character.
This piece was then fired to Cone 10. It is food-, microwave- and oven-safe (but like all ceramic serving pieces, it should be put in a cool oven, not hot) should you choose to use it for serving, or it can simply stand on its own, perhaps holding a single magnolia bloom?
