1 7/8in(45mm) diagonal copper earrings on 1/2in(12mm) silver wires
The colors in these copper earrings are the natural patinas produced by slow heating. I first cut the pieces by hand, then file and buff the edges with steel wool to ensure a smooth finish. As I heat the copper it changes from coppery pink to purple to blue to green and so on through the color spectrum.......I can stop at any time and create the starburst effect through torch-tip control. I then polish the backs to raw copper and give both sides 3 coats of clear lacquer to prevent further oxidation and to give them a durable gloss finish. Finally they get a coat of car wax to protect the surfaces against skin oils and acids.
Most of my heated copper jewelry pieces put people in mind of stars and other things astronomical.
But this pair of copper earrings reminds me of the burrs that stick determinedly to your clothes when you walk through wild fields gone to seed ... (they have a particularly irritating liking for socks).
There is a matching copper pendant elsewhere on the site (see Shop Sections)
