The 1972 Olympic Games USPS issue commemorates both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games held in Sapporo, Japan, and Munich, Germany, through individual stamp designs. Four diverse stamp designs, each with different denominations, were printed for this issue. Each stamp design was printed separately.
This set of stamps honor the Winter Olympics using the sport of bobsledding.
Set on a white background is a bobsled with 8 teammates each representing a color within the 5 Olympic rings. The design of the stamp is simple – yet stately, bold and colorful. Verbiage on the stamp reads: in black outlined letters in the upper left corner “US 8c” with the colored Olympic rings going through the “US”.; “XI Olympic Winter Games Sapporo 1972” in small black lettering at the bottom of the stamp
Each stamp measures 1" tall (2.5 cm) x 1 1/2" wide (3.8 cm). The full sheet measures 10 1/4" (26.0 cm) x 9" (22.9 cm).
These stamps are “mint” – meaning they have never been used. They have the original glue. They have however aged and are a bit yellowed.
Imperfections: Some of the outer border is missing at the top. Perforations between the 3rd and 4th, 4th and 5th stamps of the top row are not intact. No stamps have been affected.
The 5 colored Olympic rings, interlocking together represent the 5 continents where the athletes come from to participate in the Olympics. The colors have no specific significance but the 5 colors of the Olympic rings and its white background have at least 1 color of every nation’s flag in them.
My grand-aunt collected these. She was not a “true” stamp collector & basically stored them in manila envelopes. Whenever the USPS came out with a new stamp – especially a commemorative one – she purchased at least one sheet & put them away in her envelopes.
These stamps are great for collectors both young and old alike. Additionally, they’d be great for paper crafting & jewelry making or anywhere else your creativity wants to take you. They are also a great gift for someone born on the day the stamps were issued. Frame them and give them as a nice and thoughtful gift – or keep them for yourself.
Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful day!!
