after a brief googleing, i've learned that the unicorn and thistle motif is a symbol for scotland, most prominently featured on scotland's royal coat of arms. it is joined together with the lion and the rose, england's symbol, on the royal coat of arms of great britain (remember "the lion and the unicorn" rhyme?)
