In character with my usual gnomes and fairies, I decided to make a Nativity set. A Nativity set that looks pretty as a display and yet can be played with by a child. What better way to make the Christmas Story more meaningful than to make it accessable to small hands?
This is my first Nativity, and in my rush to complete it before a big craft show, I messed up the Shellac job (which can be seen in the last picture) on the trees and cave. At the bottom, the Shellac pooled a bit creating a thick, shiny and slightly darker line at the base of the stacker and trees. It does not make this set less beautiful or harder to play with, it is just a small flaw that I felt I should give a $10 discount for.
All the people in this set have hand-sewn, wool-blend felt clothes
and the cloaks of the wise men and shepherd are made from felted wool sweaters. Each person stands about 1.5-2 inches tall and the infant Jesus is about 1 inch long. The wool sheep have been needle felted using 100% clean carded wool by my lovely friend and neighbor, Sharon, from www.woolenwhimsy.etsy.com . Both sheep have curly wool coats and the larger sheep has bendy legs. :) The cave stacker is about 5 inches tall, 1 1/2 inches thick, 7 inches wide and comes apart into 4 earth-tone painted pieces. The entire set includes everything pictured except the grass play mat, including: 1 cave stacker, 2 trees, Holy Family (Mary, Jesus in Manger, Joseph), 1 shepherd, 2 sheep, 3 wisemen, and 2 mushrooms.
This lovely, heirloom-quality set would make a lovely gift for a small child or an adult looking for an earth alternative to mainstream nativities.
As with all my toys, this handmade toy should not be played with by a child who still puts things in his/her mouth. The pieces are small but you know your child :) This will ship in the US within 3 days of cleared payment, and within 1 week internationally! If you are an overseas order, and the shipping is much less than quoted I will refund the difference.
