Television lamps were popular in the 1950s, when it was believed that watching TV in the dark would hurt your eyes. The planter behind the panther might have held a plant or beaded or plastic flowers, and the light behind that gives a gentle glow. These days, the planter portion is just about the right size for a television remote, though it would also be nice with a fern or ivy. (This one was obviously used for a plant.)
The panther lamp is in very good condition. It has no cracks, and no chips except for one small chip on the back foot that is visible only from the bottom, plus another small area on the back foot that looks like a manufacturing flaw. There is some crazing of the glaze, visible mostly on the back. The light works perfectly, and the cord is original and in excellent condition. The piece is unsigned, but I've seen it attributed to American Art Potteries (with a Norwood label).
Size: About 14 inches long x 6 3/4 inches tall (35.5 x 17.2 cm)
