The clasps are easy enough to open and slip on with your thumb and index fingers. I use one when I need to put my project down - I just slip the clasp onto the last stitch and I don't have to worry about unraveling.
Knitters can also use these as "split" or clip on stitch markers. They're easy to hook onto your stitches or you can use them as regular stitch markers on up to size 5 US knitting needles.
The beads are made of glass and the findings (clasps and head pins) are all silver plated.
