Rice Straw art has been in existence for thousands of years but is in danger of being extinct. The history of straw art goes way back in time when people didn’t know how to make various colors, paint or dyes. The artists at that time used the natural colors of the rice straw (dried leaves of the rice plant) to create images. They used different shades of the rice straw (Dark, light, brown, yellow, white etc) to create color for their art works.

This unique art originated in the southern tip of India called Kerala thousands of years ago and passed on from generation to generation and less than hundred artists practices this beautiful art at this time. Ray is the only artist in USA practices rice straw art. Artist uses very primitive tools in this art like in the old times, uses spear shaped instrument to open up and straighten out the straw. Double edged razor blade or any sharp stones to cut the rice straw. The glue used in this art is called gum Arabic and it is sap from a tree and holds the tiny pieces of straw in place.
