Okay so a few years ago, in 2007, I made a zine called White Blackbirds: Interviews with women who aren't married and don't want to be. It was just what it sounds like. I made the zine because I felt ambivalent about marriage for myself and I couldn't quite seem to articulate the confusing (and mostly negative) feelings I had about it but I did want to address it, so I reached out to my ladies in the zine community and asked them for their thoughts. Their responses surprised me by being really diverse.

Then a few months ago I donated a copy of the zine to Bitch magazine's new zine library, and the librarian reviewed it (, and as a result a bunch of women emailed me to say they'd like to be interviewed if I ever did another issue, so I did. I interviewed 11 women this time around, and again it is a diverse group, some who identify as straight, some queer, some with kids, some without, and ranging in age from 20s and 30s to 50s and 60s. This time I asked people to talk about their religious background and beliefs and ethnic identity/nationality, and whether these things have affected their beliefs on marriage, and if so, how. They had insightful, surprising things to say.

The zine is half-size and 40 pages long with a cardstock cover. Helen Entwisle ( drew the charming bird on the cover.
