I was going to just decorate the tops, but I have a compulsion to turn things into pincushions that is irresistable. So the boxes became little sewing or trinket boxes and with pincushions on top. They would make sweet little sewing kits or gift boxes for jewelry, or just as a sweet thing on their own.
This box has been gessoed, sanded and given an antiquing glaze, inside and out. The sides and bottom of the box have been decoupaged with vintage sheet music.
The pincushion is made from a cream and brown seasonal print, and topped with a little spray of rusty jingle bells, mother-of-pearl buttons, and fabric leaves. It sits on top of a pinked circle of creamy bainin wool felt, surrounded by more tiny buttons. The pincushion is filled with pure new Irish wool roving, to keep pins sharp and well oiled.
There is a ton of detail in this item, and every bit of the pincushion has been securely sewn by hand. The pincushion is securely glued to the box and it is sturdy enough to be actually useful for holding things.
