So, how does a bear with a pencil emerge from, a hospital? Well, I’m off of my HR job (see Profile) each Thursday in order to help a bit at a children’s cancer hospital. So this bear was birthed, not on some frozen Arctic tundra or perched on a glazier, but in a children’s research hospital. A tinsy child’s table brims with chatting children donning face masks and paintbrushes or a handful of colored pencils. Smiles peer up from the masked edges, as their mothers sit close. Looking on, they hope for brighter days. Their children look to me, “Color WITH us!” they often plead. Now there are days they are too sick and simply watch and listen but most of the time, it’s color or bust!
So goes the story for this bear (as well as the vulture in The Daily Read picture) for on my page, his head emerged. As for the tears in that hospital not a week goes by that after a mother says, “Honey, it’s time to go home,” I hear a scream, “I’m NOT ready to leave yet!” But soon he’s flying down the hall, fan drying painted pictures that glisten in glitter and glue. Under arm, he’s squeezing a toy present from the doctor and wearing hugs from several caring nurses. As he runs alongside, yes, runs, Mother scoots a red wagon full of stuff and as for me? I wash toys and then tuck a penciled bear sketch, a rabbit or a half drawn seal into my purse and every step of the way home, I thank God for hospitals like the Memphis, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
You should have seen the one that got away this time. It was the Catch of the Day hanging a picture away. Ah, if he could just reach him. These prints of my original watercolor design could add a touch of charm to your next correspondence.
