David was a unique flute builder, he grew his own bamboo, he harvested it, and designed amazing and unique bamboo flutes for himself. He tended to set the breath hole a couple cells down the bamboo near the center depending on what length of bamboo he was making his flute out of. The flute he designed for the film, the Silent Flute is an example of his creative flute building genius. The flutes I am listing on Etsy are very similar lengths and look like the flutes Carradine made for Kill Bill, Kung Fu tv series and for the Silent Flute by Bruce Lee.
This flute is built from cured Chinese yellow bamboo stock and is around 1 1/4 inch in diameter. 48 inches in length with a double chamber above the breath hole and built in the David Carradine Kill Bill flute style. The flute can be rested on the left shoulder like a violin when playing .Tuned to the pentatonic minor scale. 4 holes on top with a thumb hole like a Shakuhachi flute. 2 + octave range. A440 tuning. Natural, beautiful and Oriental in look.
All holes are burnt via burning rods. The bore is created via burning and then colored in red. Fire and water are used exclusively within my flute building process. Brown hemp and waxed thread bindings. The bamboo is lightly colored with fire (burning) on the body of the flute and I also burn the flute and create some markings to add more depth to the look of the flute body.
The length of this flute is inspired by the flutes of the ancient Shaolin Kung Fu martial arts masters who used their instruments as walking sticks, weapons and as instruments of peaceful bamboo flute music.
