Sugar skulls are traditional Mexican folk art for the celebration of El Dia de los Muertos - The Day of the Dead. It is a day to honor our ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally, sugar skulls are made of molded sugar, and decorated with colorful icing, foil, feather, flowers, etc. They are always bright and happy looking. They are typically placed on the tomb of the deceased loved one or on a home altar. They make a place happy and inviting for the spirits of honored ancestors to visit.
These pincushions are fun and versatile. Of course, they can be used on an ancestor altar, just like traditional sugar skulls made of sugar. They are also fabulous Halloween decorations.
They are also useful pincushions, perfect for someone who wants a little more personality in their sewing room. The ubiquitous stuffed tomato pincushion just isn't for everyone.
I have also had people tell me that they want to hang them on their Christmas trees. If you are one of those people, just make a note with your order, and I'll sew a ribbon loop in the top for you!
