“I’m meeting someone,” I tell the waiter, and he ever so slightly nods, deferring to my timeline. He offers me a glass of wine while I’m waiting, and proceeds to give me a primer on viticulture when I ask what he’d recommend. This gives me time to comb his face: the softness of his nose, a Clark Kent jaw, a sloping black lock moving in concert with his red and white tangents. I settle on whatever he said, and when despite my best efforts to nurse the glass as long as possible my date had still not shown by the end of it, I could not refuse him a second glass. I tell him about the peaches I found in it, the grass and the pearl buttons of my grandmother’s cardigan. I’d found marbles as well, and tasted a fountain in Rome I couldn’t remember the name of where people make wishes. I told him I tasted diamonds in the mineral finish. Eventually he sat down. He was way cuter than the profile pic of the guy I was supposed to meet anyway.
