Inspiration for this piece was taken from my families surroundings in mid-western Kansas. We have fields of sunflowers as well as sunflowers popping up along the road side. Our state flag has a deep blue background and the yellow of the sunflower just pops against it.
The ornament is slip cast using a plaster mold and the pour hole is closed. My husband carves the sunflowers into the plain ornament when the piece is in a leather hard state, and an ornament wire is inserted before it is fired for the first time. We then apply the cobalt blue color to the background, followed by three shades of yellow on the petals and three textured glazes to the sunflowers' center. It is then sprayed with a clear glaze coat to provide it with its glass coating and fired for the second time. An outline of 18 karat gold leaf is then applied to the petals and centers of the sunflowers to further highlight the piece.
This ornament is one of a kind. Duplicates will be similar but will never be exactly the same as shown.
